What Property Tax Exemptions are there for First Responders?
The Louisiana Constitution provides an additional property value exemption of $25,000 for first responders, including firefighters, volunteer firefighters, emergency medical service personnel, emergency response dispatchers, peace officers, police officers, and sheriffs.
What are the Eligibility Requirements?
Property owners must apply annually for this exemption. Please note that retirees and surviving spouses do not qualify. To qualify for the exemption as a First Responder, you must:
- Be a full-time public/government employee.
- Reside and work in the parish of your employer.
- Your duties must include responding rapidly to emergencies.
How do you qualify for the exemption as a Volunteer Firefighter?
To qualify for the exemption as a Volunteer Firefighter, you must:
- Complete a minimum of 24 hours of firefighter continuing education within the year of application.
- Be an active member of the Louisiana State Fireman's Association or be included on the departmental personnel roster of the Volunteer Firefighter Insurance Program.
- You do not need to be a full-time employee or reside in the parish where you work.

You must apply annually, as the exemption will be removed at the end of each tax year.
